Consistent car photos in changing weather
Keep car photos consistent across sun, cloud and rain. Set practical shooting standards and recognise when a new photograph is better than more editing.
Consistent car photographs in changing weather begin with comparable capture conditions. Use a regular location and seek soft light where possible. A replacement studio background can standardise the setting, but does not automatically remove hard shadows, wet paint or strong reflections from the car.
In bright sunshine
Move into open shade if available. Avoid partly shaded bodywork under trees: leaf shadows make colour and condition difficult to assess. Check that white paint retains detail and black panels do not disappear.
If moving is impractical, choose another time for important overview photographs.
Under cloud or in rain
Cloud often softens light, but still check reflections of buildings and sky. Dry the car before photographing stock. Water droplets and wet tyres change appearance and make different shooting days harder to compare.
Do not photograph a wet car with the assumption that all water effects can be safely removed later.
Set three consistent standards
- Similar camera height and shooting distance.
- The same default framing with adequate margins.
- One approved background per exterior series.
Also define when to reshoot, such as unreadable dark panels or strong tree shadows.
What needs checking after replacement?
Lighting on the car should plausibly match the room. Watch for hard sunlight on the bonnet inside an otherwise softly lit studio. Compare paint colour and damage with the source.
