Car photography reflections: reduce them at capture
Reduce distracting car-photo reflections through position, lighting and optional polarising filters while keeping paint, glass and condition accurately visible.
The safest way to reduce distracting car photography reflections is during capture. Move the camera or vehicle, choose quieter surroundings and avoid bright objects obscuring paint and glass. Bodywork need not be entirely reflection-free: reflections also describe shape and material.
Change your viewpoint first
A small angle change can remove a building, sign or photographer from the reflected view. Inspect bonnet, doors and windows separately. An improvement on one panel does not necessarily improve the rest.
Prefer soft lighting and avoid high-contrast stripes from branches or fences.
Can a polarising filter help?
A suitable polarising filter can reduce some reflections on glass and non-metallic surfaces. Its effect depends on angle and surface. Rotate it while observing the whole car. Account for light loss and recheck sharpness.
It cannot remove every reflection at once. Inconsistent filtering across a series can also create different impressions of the paint.
Why not erase everything afterwards?
Reflections cross real body lines, scratches and dents. Generative removal may reconstruct or smooth those details. Do not use the result to make the car’s condition appear better than it is.
Changing the background also does not necessarily remove the original surroundings from every reflection.
A practical decision rule
If a reflection is merely distracting, adjust the capture. If it conceals an important component or damage, take another photograph that clearly shows the area. If that fails, reshoot under different conditions.
After processing in 123CarStudio, examine reflective areas particularly closely against the source. Preserve natural shape information and confirm that visible wear is still accurately represented.
