Car photography with a smartphone: practical tips

Take better car photos with your phone. Choose the right lens, distance and exposure while avoiding distortion, blur and unsuitable source files.

Good smartphone car photographs start with the standard camera, sufficient distance and soft light. Hold the phone level and include the whole vehicle with a margin. A higher megapixel setting matters less than sharp details and believable perspective.

Start with the standard lens

Use the normal camera as your starting point. An ultra-wide lens used close up can stretch the front and shrink the rear. Step back and reframe. Heavy digital zoom does not automatically capture more real detail.

Clean the lens. Fingerprints create haze and light smears that may only become obvious on a larger screen.

Focus and protect highlights

Tap the car to set the focus and exposure area. With white paint, check that bright panels retain detail. With black paint, make sure bodywork is distinguishable from shadow.

Adjust exposure cautiously. Avoid portrait mode and strong filters: synthetic background blur can affect mirrors, aerials and window edges.

A simple shooting sequence

  1. Hold the phone horizontally around headlight height.
  2. Leave space around the vehicle and keep the camera level.
  3. Capture overview shots at a similar distance.
  4. Photograph the interior and details separately.
  5. Enlarge a few pictures on location to check sharpness.

Keep suitable source files

Retain the original images and avoid unnecessary forwarding through chat. For 123CarStudio, use JPG/JPEG, PNG or WebP; export HEIC, DNG and RAW files to JPG first.

If you later replace the background, the source photograph still determines what can be represented accurately. A model cannot reliably restore a blurred badge or a missing bumper.
